Prometheus: Wrapping Up

Hey, I did my part - I saw Moon, and even managed to do it during it's (sadly brief) theatrical run! And I agree with you - it's an underrated gem. And I like the idea of the Malick lunch film. It would be about three hours long, take ten years to make, and would mostly be unrelated philosophical musings about life imposed over the film as they slowly ate their lunch in the most astonishingly filmed cafeteria ever.

Yeah, I started to feel like neither of us were really making a dent in the other's perspective...and yet, I really enjoyed the conversation more than I expected. After spending so much time watching Prometheus attacked for all kinds of little details (to me), I at least feel like I understand how those things can add up to a negative viewpoint of the film - even if I completely disagree with that viewpoint. I think you sum it up nicely with the importance we both put on various aspects of the film. For you, the small details add up to a cluttered, unfocused film; you could never get past them to see the big picture. For me, the big picture was so engrossing that the small details didn't matter. That's two very different approaches to the film, and while I don't think my attitude has changed much through all this, I do feel like I understand your point better than I did at the beginning.

"For you, the small details add up to a cluttered, unfocused film; you could never get past them to see the big picture. For me, the big picture was so engrossing that the small details didn't matter."
And I'm definitely curious to do this again sometime, but I'm hoping we can reverse the roles. Maybe you can help me appreciate the new Malick film more than I probably will in the first place; with it coming out so soon, you can be the cheerleader and I can be the person grumbling about how they just didn't appreciate it. Maybe you can finally destroy this block I have on appreciating Malick beyond his beautiful camerawork!

But, despite my occasional gaps in writing, I did really enjoy this project. If anything, I ended up feeling even more solid about my feelings on Prometheus than I did in the first place - which, I know, is not really what you hoped for. But you did really make me think about each of the points you brought up, and in some cases I realized things about the film I had never thought about in the first place. So thanks, in your own way, for helping me like it even more!

I don't know if any of my thoughtful, magnificently crafted film school douchebaggery helped you like Prometheus anymore. But I definitely had a blast.
