Episode 172: Serialization

This week, Josh and Dietrich sit down to talk about an unusual approach to publication: serialized novels. From its origins with authors like Charles Dickens, to a surge in serialization triggered by the digital reading revolution, the pair discusses the history of serials, and touches on the few serial books they've read. Josh talks about the thrill of picking up each new section of The Green Mile as they were released, and the excitement of discussing every detail over the months the book was published. Dietrich sits down with the newest book in John Scalzi's Old Man's War series, a book that was originally published in serialized format. They discuss the challenges of serialized publication, from getting publishers to cooperate to the differences in writing a novel in one chunk or in many. Finally, Josh discovers that you may have access to serialized books in more ways than you thought. In addition, Dietrich struggles to talk about one of the best and most horrifying nonfiction books he's ever read with Jon Krakauer's Missoula, and Josh discovers an outstanding book about an Alzheimer's patient with a dark secret. Finally, the two talk about a documentary about a murder investigation, a few outstanding board games, and they wrap up with Dietrich being a giant, giant nerd.
