Episode 167: The Phenomena Books

Picture
This week, the trio tackles that rarest of title: the book that becomes more than a classic, more than a bestseller, but a true phenomenon. From Jurassic Park to Harry Potter, fromThe Da Vinci Code to Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, it's an eclectic list, including young adult, erotica, thrillers, mysteries, and more. Josh talks about the strange effect that each of these books have had on the cultural landscape. Dietrich comments about how the success of some bled into the success of others. Rachel looks at the power of social media in driving some of the newer hits, while simultaneously making her cohosts feel really, REALLY old. It's an interesting discussion, and while they don't sort out the magic formula for publishing success, they do see that each of these books combined the right story in the right place at the right time. In addition, Josh continues exploring Rick Riordan's books, and discusses a book that has nothing wrong with it... but not much right. Finally, Dietrich is pleased with the new Avengers film, if somewhat underwhelmed, Rachel talks about a new way to experience video games, and Josh tells them all that they're stupid and their stuff isn't as insane and amazing as what he saw. He's kind of right.  You can send questions and comments to us by utilizing our Contact Us form.
