Episode 155: Should Publishers Survive?

Picture
This week, Josh and Dietrich sit down to debate an article questioning the very need for publishers as an entire industry. The pair take issue with much of this argument, discussing the valuable role that publishers play in vetting, editing, and designing books. At the same time, they also acknowledge the fact that changes in technology and consumer habits have made a lot of what publishers do obsolete. The discussion leads both to agree that some major changes need to be made to the industry as a whole, and they wrap up that discussion by talking about some of the changes they would like to see. In addition, Josh raves about the newest book by David Mitchell, The Bone Clocks, Dietrich gets an advance look at a new science fiction short story collection, and a few new self-published books that Josh is quite impressed with. Finally, they wrap up with a discussion of the remarkable first season of Last Week Tonight, John Oliver's groundbreaking show.
