Episode 154: The Snarkcast, or How to Tell a Different Kind of Story

Picture
This week, Josh, Rachel and Dietrich sit down to discuss some alternate methods of storytelling, inspired in no small part by the success of the new podcast Serial. They look at the concept of serialized storytelling, from The Green Mile by Stephen King, to serialized Kindle books, to podcast storytelling. They discuss how modern stand-up comedy takes its cues from the more traditional forms of oral storytelling. Finally, they look at how new distribution methods have allowed for serialized releases to become more and more popular in all aspects of media. In addition, the pair read an email from a suspiciously familiar listener, discuss a new David Mitchell book that has Josh taking his time, and Dietrich plays the role of proud parent as his daughter reads and loves a Vietnam War book by Tim O'Brien. Finally, they wrap up with a discussion of a strange television show, a convention that leaves Rachel and Dietrich somewhat ambivalent, and one of the most unique and bizarre video games that any of them have ever played. Plus, they manage all this while Dietrich and Rachel endure the bitter scorn pouring from Josh. You ignore a guy's texts for a few days...
