Episode 141: Wheel of Thrones

This week, it's an original recipe style episode, as Josh and Dietrich sit down to discuss a melange of mini-topics, all very loosely inspired by the Game of Thrones adaptations. First, the pair revisit the controversial topic of spoilers. How to avoid them, why they inspire such rage and bitterness, and whether or not being spoiled actually effects your enjoyment of a book. (Spoiler warning: It does.) Next, the pair tackle secondary characters in books. From the ominous Angel and Louis in John Connelly's Charlie Parker series to the force of nature that is Bubba Rigowski in Dennis Lehane's Kinzie and Gennaro series, secondary characters can add massive amounts of depth and perspective to a story, if done well. They discuss who does it well, who does it poorly, and what makes all the difference. Finally, they look at the delicate art form of buildups and payoffs, where the best authors can leave your jaw on the floor while you marvel at what they've been leading to for the entire novel. Before the main topic, Josh discusses a new short story collection by one of the pair's favorite authors, and Dietrich reads a book that inspired the last movie you'd expect having been inspired by a book. Finally, they wrap it up with a discussion of the new Captain America film and a pair of the most violent - and entertaining - movies they'd seen in quite a long time.
