Episode 113: Nay to YA?

Picture
This week, Josh and Dietrich tackle an issue they've been bouncing back and forth for quite a long time: what the hell makes a "Young Adult" book young adult? Is it the characters? The thickness? The themes? The pair look at some books with juvenile characters that most definitely do NOT fit the genre, and look at a few that may fit better than you think. Ultimately, the question comes down to whether the classification of Young Adult has become meaningless. In addition, Dietrich discusses a fascinating book about science's efforts to explain the afterlife, Josh discusses the sophomore effort by a long time friend of the podcast, and the pair both spend a few minutes raving and gushing over the brilliant new novel by Joe Hill. Finally, they wrap up with a discussion of superheroes, old man rantings, and a look at the current season of Mad Men. You can send questions or comments to questions@thelibrarypolice.com.

Young Adult Books

32:00 to 1:07:12

This week, we take a look at exactly what it means to be classified as a young adult book. So often, the classification seems to mean that the book just has teenagers as the main characters, and that's an idea we're both struggling with. So we look at some books that don't quite fit in the classification, and debate if the classification even means anything anymore.

Off The Bookshelves

1:07:12 to 1:32:49

This week, Dietrich takes a look at Iron Man 3, where his mixed reaction may surprise some of you who might expect some more fanboyism. After he shares some thoughts on a surprisingly tough videogame (which prompts some old man commentary from Josh), we move on to some television discussion, including a look at the current season of Mad Men.
